Dead Horses

RACETRACK OWNERS MUST INSIST ON MORE TRAINER AND VETERINARIAN SUPERVISION OF THE EQUINE ATHLETE’S HEALTH AND SOUNDNESS

Listed in this section of our website is information regarding horses who died on the racetrack while doing their jobs. Their deaths were not as a result of wrecks but probably as a result of not being physically fit to compete. Because horses cannot talk, it is the trainer’s responsibility to evaluate the health and soundness of every horse in his/her stable. Most trainers accept this responsibility, but there can be no guarantee that each horse will compete without incidence. One huge problem is that veterinarians and trainers will “patch-up” horses to keep them racing, when if fact, they should be given time off to heal or be retired.
